The Current Beneath All Things
The prevailing scholarly model describes Fortera as the hidden field through which matter, motion, structure, and living systems remain in agreement.
It is not a substance or fuel. It cannot be mined, bottled, burned, transported, or consumed. Its existence is inferred from measurable effects: pressure without airflow, sympathetic vibration, instruments moving into unexplained agreement, altered balance, and rare disturbances in physical matter or living bodies.
Fortera is everywhere. Active Fortera is not.
What Fortera Is
The prevailing scholarly model describes Fortera as the hidden field through which matter, motion, structure, and living systems remain in agreement. It is not a fuel or a substance. It is the deeper order that enables the achievements and dangers of the modern age.
Most of Aeon appears stable. In ordinary places, Fortera remains settled deeply enough that familiar physical processes dominate. Stone keeps its shape, instruments respond predictably, and living bodies follow their expected course.
Sources are different.
At a source, Fortera appears unusually active. Local conditions become more responsive, less stable, and harder to predict.
Fortera is everywhere. Active Fortera is not.
Fortera and Éterlumin
Fortera and Éterlumin are closely connected, but they are not the same.
Fortera is the underlying field.
Éterlumin is a naturally occurring gas found in and around active source regions. Once extracted, it can retain a temporary, calibrated relationship with Fortera. That relationship allows Éterlumin to support lift systems, pressure work, tuned communications, navigation instruments, and other advanced technologies.
Fortera cannot be stored. Éterlumin can. This distinction defines the modern age.
Freshly extracted Éterlumin begins degrading after it leaves its source environment. Its calibration drifts, its stability weakens, and its remaining service life shortens. Refinement slows that decline through controlled reactivation and calibration.

Sources
A source is a region where Fortera appears unusually active.
Sources may lie beneath hills, marshes, seabeds, valleys, ruins, burial sites, caverns, faults, or structures whose geometry seems to affect local behaviour. Some extend across broad regions. Others are concentrated around a vent system, fissure, chamber, or gas-rich geological pocket.
A source is not a simple deposit. Its behaviour may be influenced by:

- Water movement.
- Extraction history.
- Machinery.
- Built structures.
- Repeated disturbance.
- Nearby living systems.
- Previous accidents.
- Factors no accepted theory yet explains.
Two sources can yield similar Éterlumin while responding very differently to intrusion.

Repeated, synchronised, or highly ordered disturbances correlate with stronger source reactions. Specialists disagree about why.
Proposed explanations include pressure interaction, resonance, geometry, repeated movement, instrument feedback, living presence, extraction damage, and source-specific behaviour.

Fortera is rarely identified through one dramatic event. Surveyors look for clusters of related signs.
Pressure without airflow
Ears tighten, teeth ache, or sealed containers flex while ordinary pressure readings remain unchanged.
Sympathetic vibration
Separate objects begin answering one another at the same interval.
Instrument agreement
Unconnected gauges, pendulums, reeds, or needles move toward the same reading without a shared mechanism.
Disturbed sound
Echoes return incorrectly, voices lose direction, or a rhythm continues after its source has stopped.
Altered balance
People feel the ground tilt or sense a pull toward an object while loose items remain still.

Movements, sounds, phrases, or mechanical cycles recur with small variations.

Fortera stands behind many of Aeon's most important technologies, but it does so indirectly. Calibrated Éterlumin supports:

- Survey equipment.
- Specialised industrial machinery.
- Experimental medical devices.
These systems do not consume Fortera as fuel. They function because calibrated gas and tuned materials can maintain a temporary relationship with the field. This has transformed transport, trade, exploration, warfare, and state power. It has also created dependence.

A person's relationship to Fortera has two separate parts: their knowledge or sensitivity, and whether they carry a lasting condition.
Primary relationship
Uninvolved
No specialized training or unusual sensitivity.
Educated
Understands Fortera through engineering, medicine, theology, scholarship, or naval service. Education provides knowledge, not immunity.
Sensitive
Notices disturbances earlier than most through pressure, rhythm, sound, balance, dreams, or instrument behaviour. Sensitivity is warning, not mastery.
Practitioner
Trained in a Powered Art or ritual discipline that creates controlled conditions for a Fortera response — with a defined method, a limited effect, a sensory sign, and a cost.
Lasting condition
None
Fortera has not permanently altered the person.
Marked
Source contact or a powerful Fortera event permanently changed the person's body, senses, memory, dreams, or relationship with nearby phenomena.
Afflicted
A recurring condition connected to Fortera, inheritance, source exposure, or the moons.

Theological academies
Religious institutions study Fortera through doctrine, ritual, sacred order, and inherited observation. They preserve lunar records, ceremonial procedures, accounts of marked individuals, ritual geometry, descriptions of unusual events, historical containment practices, and traditions of interruption and withdrawal. Their records may contain valuable evidence. Their conclusions are not always correct.
Great universities
The great universities study Fortera through natural philosophy, engineering, medicine, measurement, and experiment. Engineers challenge theologians. Surveyors distrust laboratory models. Physicians dispute naval classifications. Governments support public research while restricting strategic discoveries. No university possesses a complete theory.
Refineries and survey offices
Refineries and survey offices hold the most practical knowledge of Fortera and Éterlumin. Their authority rests on procedure — what can be measured, what can be repeated safely, what must be isolated, when a batch must be rejected, when a site must be abandoned, and when survival matters more than explanation. Their records are among the most valuable documents in Aeon. They are also among the most frequently classified, altered, stolen, or destroyed.
Diplomacy and power
Knowledge of Fortera is political power. Crowns, navies, churches, universities, refineries, merchant houses, and intelligence services compete for source regions, extraction rights, calibration methods, trained specialists, transport routes, certification systems, survey records, industrial applications, and strategic research. No power controls Fortera itself. Power comes from controlling the people, places, and systems that make its effects usable.
What Ordinary People Believe
Common beliefs claim that:
- Sources become angry when disturbed.
- Éterlumin remembers where it came from.
- Marked people attract accidents.
- Repeated songs wake buried places.
- Iron protects against source effects.
- Mirrors confuse disturbances.
- Children notice source activity first.
- Churches know more than they admit.
- Failed naval batches are secretly dumped at sea.
Some are superstition. Some preserve fragments of forgotten procedure. Some are propaganda. Most people cannot tell which is which.
What Remains Unknown
Fortera theory predicts procedure more reliably than cause. A specialist may recognise a drifting batch, unstable chamber, or dangerous convergence without understanding why it is happening.
The deepest questions remain unanswered:
- Why do sources differ?
- Can a source retain earlier patterns?
- Why are some living beings changed permanently?
- Why do certain structures influence local behaviour?
- What determines whether a disturbance settles or escalates?
- Why do some lunar alignments appear significant?
- Can incompatible patterns coexist?
- Is Fortera the deepest structure of reality, or only the first layer Aeon has learned to observe?
Aeon depends upon a field it cannot fully explain. That dependence has produced extraordinary progress. It may also produce the next catastrophe.
