The Borrowed Tide is a mangrove colony composed of thousands of small translucent organisms.
The colony forms around anything that provides structure: rope, cloth, branches, bones, wreckage, abandoned tools. Human-shaped debris creates the most disturbing result.
The wrong survivor
From a distance, the Borrowed Tide may resemble a survivor kneeling in shallow water, a body tangled in roots, or someone raising a hand toward an approaching boat. It does not imitate people intentionally. It simply grows around what the sea provides.
When disturbed, the colony collapses and reforms around movement. Thousands of bodies cling to skin and clothing, producing a numbing Fortera pulse that interferes with balance and direction. Victims often believe the shore is moving away from them.
The colony feeds on warmth, salt, and organic material. It is neither cruel nor intelligent, but prolonged contact can strip flesh as efficiently as any predator.
The knotted line
Local boat crews test suspected survivors by throwing a knotted line. A person catches it. The Borrowed Tide grows around it.
A real survivor disturbs the water unevenly. The Borrowed Tide moves with the water even when it appears to struggle against it.
At the table
The Borrowed Tide turns rescue into uncertainty. It is most effective after a wreck, during a night search, or when the players cannot afford to ignore a possible survivor.
