The Engineer's Rules

The phrases that keep Éterlumin rooms from becoming graves.

Éterlumin engineering is learned through mathematics, diagrams, apprenticeship, scar tissue, and phrases short enough to remember when the deck has turned sideways. Different schools disagree about theory. Good crews still recognize the same rules because pressure does not care which academy printed the manual.

Guide, do not grasp

Fortera establishes a condition, rhythm, or instruction. Éterlumin supplies force. The operator guides the process toward a stable response and stops when the system reaches it. Trying to hold the reaction through willpower invites drift, overcorrection, and a contest the human body cannot win.

Curves, not edges

Abrupt boundaries gather stress. Smooth changes give pressure and field response somewhere to go. Engineers round channels, stage transitions, bleed loads, and distrust any design that makes energy meet a hard wall without a clean exit.

One voice, not two

Two competing instructions can create interference, false stability, or runaway correction. During an incident, one person calls the sequence. Everyone else reports numbers, sound, smell, heat, movement, and visible change. No one improvises a second correction because the first seems slow.

Stop at the first shiver

The earliest warning may be too small for an instrument: a jaw lightness, hair lifting along the arm, a metallic-cold sensation at the teeth, a gauge needle holding too perfectly, a vent mesh warming without flow, or a second note hiding beneath the main hum. An operator who waits for spectacle has already waited too long.

Cut. Vent. Flood.

  1. Cut the instruction and isolate the active feed.
  2. Vent pressure and active gas through the route designed to receive it.
  3. Flood or quench the affected assembly according to the vessel's design, preventing the reaction from finding a new boundary inside the hull.

The order matters. Cutting without venting may leave force trapped. Venting without control may spread the active condition. Flooding too early may force the reaction across a boundary it had not yet reached.

Band. Vent. Balance. Flush later.

This is the field sequence used when a vessel must remain aloft long enough to survive the emergency. Band the damage. Open the safe path. Balance lift and load across the hull. Only then flush residue, contamination, and field drift when weather, altitude, and time allow. A ship can live while imperfect. It cannot live while every station attempts to make it perfect at once.

Éterlumin is not poisonous. A leak is dangerous because of pressure, activation, heat, field instability, oxygen displacement in enclosed spaces, resonance, and rupture. Do not describe it as a toxin or a fantasy miasma.
