Reef Shepherds are immense marine animals whose armored backs support entire living ecosystems.
Coral, shellfish, sea grass, mangrove roots, wreckage, and even temporary human shelters can grow across an old Shepherd. The largest specimens are mistaken for islands until they move.
Migration and consequence
Reef Shepherds travel slowly along deep pressure currents. Their migrations open some channels while closing others. A harbor considered safe one year may become impassable the next because a Shepherd has rested across its entrance.
When they turn violent
They are normally peaceful. Violent reactions are most often caused by:
- sustained cannon fire
- mining or drilling into the living reef
- large underwater Éterlumin discharges
- low-frequency Fortera signals
- attempts to anchor permanent structures into the shell
A frightened Shepherd does not hunt ships. It alters the sea around them. It pushes through shoals, overturns markers, raises heavy waves, and carries reefs into water that was clear moments earlier.
Some island communities maintain relationships with specific Shepherds, recognizing their routes and avoiding harm to their feeding grounds. Imperial authorities usually classify the creatures as navigational obstructions or exploitable territory. Attempts to kill one have destroyed more ports than the living animal ever threatened.
A Shepherd preparing to move dislodges small reef fish several days beforehand. The water becomes unusually clear before the animal rises.
At the table
A Reef Shepherd can change a map, block a fleet, carry a hidden settlement, or force players to choose between local knowledge and official orders.
