A Source Beast is not an animal altered by Éterlumin. It is not a buried species, an ancient guardian, or a spirit summoned from beneath the earth.
It is what can happen when a source chamber fails to correct itself.
The people who escaped the Canula cleft described pressure gathering beneath the stone, light bending downward, and something moving where no body could have fitted. First came a ridge of wet, mineral-dark hide. Then claws. Then a jaw. The rest followed as though the chamber were remembering a creature that had never properly existed.
A shape that came after hunger
The Source Beast has no clean natural form.
It moves low to the ground, its belly close to stone and its limbs striking in rapid, violent beats. Its body is heavy, muscular, and crooked, built for sudden pursuit rather than endurance or grace.
Its spine rises into irregular ridges, some resembling bone and others the hardened edges of cooled mineral. The head hangs unnaturally low while stalking, then snaps upward with speed that does not match the creature's size.
The jaw dominates the face.
Its eyes appear to sit too deeply within the skull. Witnesses disagree on their number and color, but most remember the suggestion of a cold brightness far behind the bone.
People instinctively attempt to compare it to familiar creatures: wolf, great cat, boar, lizard. None of the comparisons survive more than a moment.
The Source Beast does not resemble several animals joined together. It resembles a purpose that acquired whatever anatomy it required. Pursuit before flesh. Appetite before shape.
The pale seams
Pale seams run along its flanks, shoulders, neck, and lower jaw.
They are not ordinary wounds. They open and close as the creature breathes, exposing a blue-white brightness that produces little heat. The seams widen when the Beast is near active Fortera, quickened Éterlumin, or a disturbed source zone.
Its body sometimes appears incomplete around these openings. Hide, muscle, and pale illumination occupy the same space without settling into a stable boundary.
A shot may tear the outer tissue while leaving the brightness beneath untouched. Moments later, the edges can pull together incorrectly, creating a thicker plate, a new fold, or a joint that did not exist before.
The Beast does not heal like an animal. It continues correcting.
The storm-scent
The first warning is often a smell. Cold metal. Wet stone. Copper. Rain before lightning, even when the air is dry and the sky is clear.
Teeth may begin to ache. Fine hairs rise. Instruments tremble without giving a useful reading. Éterlumin systems may acquire a second note beneath their usual hum.
Then comes pressure. Breathing becomes deliberate. The tongue presses against the teeth. Distance seems uncertain. A scrape heard far below may suddenly sound as though it came from the other side of the wall.
By the time the Beast is visible, it may already have been present in the chamber's response for several minutes.
It follows the correction
The Source Beast does not hunt by scent alone. It is drawn toward whatever the chamber is attempting to answer:
- an active Fortera pattern
- a quickened Éterlumin apparatus
- an interrupted signal
- a person carrying the residue of an earlier source event
- a repeated word or rhythm recognized by the chamber
- the source zone itself
It may pass exposed prey to pursue a person who has unknowingly answered the field. It may strike a wall because the source lies beyond it. It may stop in front of someone and listen through the stone beneath their feet.
The creature appears to perceive resonance, pressure, and unresolved patterns as directly as an ordinary predator perceives movement.
The hum becomes a hunt
Near a Source Beast, sound stops behaving reliably. Footsteps return from the wrong direction. A spoken word may arrive before the speaker finishes it. The chamber's hum may change pitch whenever the Beast moves, as though the surrounding space is correcting around the body.
In narrow passages, this creates the impression that the creature is:
- behind the group
- beneath them
- approaching from ahead
- moving inside the walls
Several of these impressions may be true at once.
The Beast does not teleport in the ordinary sense. The surrounding field temporarily stops agreeing on distance. A creature born from that disagreement can exploit it instinctively.
What it wants
The Source Beast is often described as hungry. That is true, but incomplete.
It may kill and consume living creatures. It can also ignore bodies entirely while pursuing an active chamber, a marked individual, or a Fortera working.
Its deeper appetite appears to be for resolution. It moves toward incompatible signals as though compelled to force them into one answer. When it reaches the source of the contradiction, it may attack, absorb, silence, or physically reshape whatever it finds.
The Beast is not trying to understand the problem. It is trying to make the problem stop.
Recognition
The Source Beast may display moments of recognition. It can turn toward a remembered word. It may react to an old name, a familiar pulse, or a person connected to a previous chamber event. This does not mean that a human mind survives inside it.
Recognition may be a residue preserved by the field rather than a memory held by the creature. A Source Beast can know someone without knowing why. That knowledge makes the encounter more dangerous, not less.
Signs that one is forming
A Source Beast does not always emerge immediately. Early warning signs include:
- scrapes that follow the group without a visible source
- pressure returning after being successfully released
- the chamber responding to two separate people at once
- names, carvings, or stored patterns dimming
- gas and light gathering toward a central hollow
- distances becoming difficult to judge
- a dragging sound from a space too small to contain a body
- a second rhythm beneath the chamber's hum
- sudden silence from memorial or containment systems
A source chamber is a management space in which ancient structure, Fortera concentration, pressure, and Éterlumin cycling meet. When stable, it contains and regulates. When forced to answer incompatible instructions, the same corrective behavior can become catastrophic.
Surviving an encounter
Ordinary weapons can injure the body, but attacking the Beast without addressing the chamber may only give the correction more damage to reorganize. Experienced field crews follow several principles:
- Stop adding instructions. Multiple Fortera workings can strengthen the contradiction.
- Silence unnecessary machinery. Cut active Éterlumin systems or move them away from the chamber.
- Do not chase the changing geometry. Choose one route, mark it physically, and keep contact with the group.
- Vent pressure where a safe path exists. Do not open every valve at once.
- Break repeated signals. A rhythm, word, pulse, or apparatus that continues answering the chamber may continue feeding the Beast.
- Move away from the source. The Beast becomes more physically stable near the active field and less certain as the distance grows.
- Do not assume it is dead because it has stopped moving. A Source Beast may become still while the chamber attempts another correction.
What the Source Beast is not
It is not:
- a natural predator
- a conventional Éterlumin mutation
- a were-beast
- a demon
- a source guardian deliberately created by the ancient builders
- evidence that Éterlumin is poisonous
- a creature living inside crystal
Éterlumin is a gas shaped by local Fortera conditions. The blue-white illumination surrounding a Source Beast is a field effect produced by pressure, activation, and instability, not a mineral body or crystal deposit.

The Source Beast is a runaway correction condensed into physical matter. Before the creature emerged, the Canula source chamber was already damaged and actively correcting around an unresolved disturbance. Shatterstein introduced a deliberate Fortera pulse. At the same time, the chamber recognized an older pattern carried by Tarkov. The two signals were incompatible. The chamber could not settle on one reference. It could not discard either. Pressure accumulated instead of resolving. The disturbance that had been following the group through the chamber became clearer with every attempted correction. Eventually, the system gave that disturbance mass. The Beast was not summoned from elsewhere. It was produced locally when energy, memory, biological pattern, and unresolved instruction collapsed into one unstable physical answer. The manuscript describes the process as the disturbance finding flesh, or perhaps remembering it, after the chamber gave it a shape it could no longer take back.
Running the Beast
Treat the Source Beast as both a creature and an environmental failure. During an encounter, it should:
- pursue whoever or whatever is answering the chamber most strongly
- alter its body in response to repeated attacks
- move through temporarily distorted distances
- cause the chamber to dim, pulse, or lose stored patterns
- become stronger when characters use competing Fortera effects
- weaken when the group establishes one clear rhythm, one route, and one source of instruction
- retreat toward the source when physically threatened
- force characters to choose between fighting it and stabilizing the chamber
The Beast should never feel like a sack of wounds waiting to be emptied. Every successful attack should reveal something:
- the pale seams widen
- the creature develops a new support ridge
- a damaged limb corrects into a less human angle
- the chamber answers the impact
- a character experiences a memory that does not belong to them
- the Beast changes target because someone else has become the stronger signal
Defeating it
A Source Beast can be destroyed physically, but that should be extremely difficult while it remains connected to an active chamber. Better outcomes include:
- forcing the chamber into one stable reference
- breaking the feedback between the Beast and the source
- venting accumulated pressure in a controlled direction
- silencing the pulse that continues to define its body
- drawing it away until the field can no longer maintain the correction
- sealing it in a region where no active instruction reaches it
Destroying the Beast does not automatically repair the chamber. Repairing the chamber does not guarantee that every part of the Beast disappears. Once the field has produced real matter, some part of the answer may remain.
