Canula is awake through people who do not appear on official charts: fishers who know which boats return too light, porters who feel weight through a crate, laundresses who notice powder burns on cuffs, children who learn the schedule of guard horses, tavern staff who hear which accent returns after midnight, plantation workers who know which road is used only when the overseer lies, and neighborhood watchers who can empty a lane without ringing a bell.

The harbor mouths

A harbor mouth is not one organization. It is a person or place through which information moves because ordinary life already passes there. Canula as an actor

The island should never function only as the place where Albion, Valdegracia, Heller, Stroomdijk, or Luminore make decisions. Local people observe the contest, exploit divisions, conceal what must survive, sell what they can afford to lose, and decide which foreign claim should arrive late. The powers believe they are using Canula. Canula is also deciding what use to make of them.
